Yoodli Language & Localization Overview

How spoken language, UI localization, and user-generated content work together in Yoodli.

Yoodli handles language in three distinct layers: the spoken language a learner uses to interact with the AI persona, the UI language of the Yoodli platform itself, and the user-generated content authored by admins (titles, descriptions, custom goals, and similar).

Each layer is controlled differently and changing one does not automatically change the others. This document explains how each works, what learners and admins can configure, and what is currently behind a feature flag.

1. Spoken Language

Spoken language refers to the language a learner uses to interact with an AI persona during practice: pitches, presentations, interviews, and roleplays. This is a per-user, per-session selection set from the language menu at the bottom left of the video preview before starting practice.

The learner's selected practice language drives the transcript, the AI persona's replies, the AI's spoken voice, and the post-session feedback. It defaults to the user's browser language and can be changed at any time.

Yoodli currently supports the following languages:

We are looking to add support for more languages in the future.

Language Variations

Yoodli supports regional versions of English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. When regional variations were introduced, any existing settings were automatically updated to a default region:

  • English → English – USA

  • French → French – France

  • Portuguese → Portuguese – Brazil

  • Spanish → Spanish – Spain

For English, transcripts, AI replies, and feedback all adjust to the chosen region. The only thing that does not change with region is the AI voice's intonation — that stays tied to the voice selected for the persona.

Changing the Spoken Language

Learners can swap languages from the language menu at the bottom left of the video preview before they begin a roleplay. The selection applies to that session and any subsequent sessions until changed.

AI Instructions and Practice Language

  • AI roleplay language and feedback are based on the learner's selected practice language, which defaults to the browser's language but can be changed at any time.

  • AI instructions (the prompts that define how a persona behaves) work in any language.

2. Localization / Globalization

Localization, in this document, refers specifically to the UI of the Yoodli platform including headers, button names, navigation labels, menus, and other system rendered text. It does not affect user-generated content such as member-facing descriptions, roleplay titles, custom goals, or persona instructions.

How Yoodli's UI Language Is Determined

  • The Yoodli web app's interface automatically matches the browser's default (top-preferred) language.

  • Switching the spoken/practice language in the language menu does not change the UI language. The UI follows the browser; the practice experience follows the user selection.

  • Arabic UI translations are not yet available. Users with Arabic set as their top browser language will see the Yoodli interface render in the next available supported UI language.

Changing Browser Language Settings

Because the Yoodli UI follows the browser's top-preferred language, the UI language is changed by changing the browser's language list.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and go to Settings.

  3. Scroll to Languages under the Advanced section.

  4. Under "Preferred languages," add the desired language if needed and move it to the top of the list.

  5. Restart Chrome for the changes to take effect.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Edge.

  2. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and go to Settings.

  3. Navigate to the Languages section.

  4. Add the desired language if it is not already listed and drag it to the top.

  5. Restart Edge for the changes to apply.

Safari (Mac)

  1. Open System Settings > General > Language & Region.

  2. Add the desired language if needed and set it as the primary language.

  3. Restart Safari for the changes to apply.

Troubleshooting Language Settings

If Yoodli displays the wrong UI language despite updating browser settings, try the following:

  • Ensure the browser is fully restarted after making changes.

  • Confirm the desired language is set as the top preferred language in the browser.

  • Clear the browser's cache and try accessing Yoodli again.

  • Verify the desired language has a Yoodli UI translation available (Arabic is not yet supported for the UI).

Scope reminder: Changing the browser language updates only Yoodli's UI labels. It does not retranslate roleplay titles, scenario descriptions, custom goal text, persona prompts, or any other content authored by admins. Those follow the rules in Section 3.

3. User-Generated Content (Admin Translation)

User-generated content is any text an admin authors inside Yoodli that a learner can see: roleplay titles, scenario descriptions, custom goal names and descriptions, program landing pages, persona prompts, and similar fields. None of this content is automatically translated when a learner's UI or practice language changes.

Default Behavior

  • User-entered content (e.g., roleplay names, goal descriptions, custom prompts) is not auto-translated.

  • A roleplay authored in English will display in English to every learner regardless of their browser language or selected practice language, unless an admin provides a translation.

  • AI instructions can be written in any language. English generally produces the strongest results, but writing instructions in the training language can help the AI capture nuance.

Admin Translation (Feature Flag)

Admin Translation is an available feature currently gated behind a feature flag. When enabled for an organization, it allows admins to provide their own translations for user-generated content so learners see the right text in the right language.

What Admin Translation Covers

  • Roleplay titles

  • Scenario and program descriptions (including member-facing descriptions)

  • Custom goal names and descriptions

  • Other admin-authored, learner-visible text fields

How It Works (Conceptual)

  • Admins author the base version of the content in their working language.

  • For each piece of content, admins provide one translation per language they need to support.

  • When a learner views the content, Yoodli displays the translation that matches their context; if no translation exists for that language, the base version is shown.

  • Translations are owned and maintained by the admin — Yoodli does not machine-translate user-generated content on behalf of the org.

Enablement

  • Admin Translation is off by default. To evaluate or pilot the feature, customers should request enablement through their Yoodli CSM or AE.

  • Once enabled, the translation fields appear inline on the relevant authoring surfaces (roleplay builder, custom goal editor, program configuration, and similar).

Important: Admin Translation is the only mechanism by which user-generated content appears in a non-source language. Changing the browser UI language (Section 2) or the practice language (Section 1) does not translate admin-authored text.

Quick Reference: Which Setting Controls What

  • Spoken language (transcript, AI replies, feedback, AI voice): Controlled by the learner's practice language selection in the language menu before practice. Defaults to the browser's language.

  • Yoodli UI (buttons, navigation, system labels): Controlled by the browser's top-preferred language. Arabic UI is not yet available.

  • Admin-authored content (titles, descriptions, custom goals, persona prompts): Controlled by the admin. Not auto-translated. Admin Translation (feature-flagged) lets admins supply per-language translations.
